Jeff’s Post – Hello Maine!

It has been a few days since I have posted but boy have we been putting in the miles.  Well more car miles (about 1000 miles over the last two days) but I have found time to run and managed to get in two runs with Tamara.

We left for Maine on Saturday morning.  Our plan was to leave early around 6:00am so I knew I needed to get up extra early to try to squeeze a run in.  I set the alarm clock for 4:00am – Really – 4:00am and I’m on Vacation but that is what “runners” do to try to squeeze in a daily run.  I woke up with a spring in my step and headed down to the treadmill.  Time would be my enemy this day as I was trying to get in as many miles as I could in the limited amount of time I had.  I was thrilled to be able to get in 7 miles.  After my run on Saturday we spent the next 14 hours driving to Maine.  It was a long drive but I enjoyed it and prior to this trip the furthest north I have been was New Jersey.  It is really beautiful up here and with this trip we have covered the entire east coast this year.

Sunday morning Tamara and I woke up at 6:00am to try to get a run in before we began our day.  It was so refreshing to run in cool weather after what has seemed like months of running in incredibly hot conditions.  We ran through a town called Kenduskeag.  The scenery was beautiful.  I was a bit worried about running on the narrow roads without shoulders but that worry subsided after seeing only one car during the first 5 miles.  We had a great run – Tamara broke off after around 6 miles.  I wanted to get a longer run in and kept going.  I ended up with 13.1 miles. I was really happy with that and really enjoyed my first Maine run.  I’ve been fortunate to run in quite a few states this year and would like to run in all 50 by the time I turn 50.  Time will tell and I have 10 years but it is something I think about as I get to run in a new place.

Tamara mentioned on her way down that she wanted to get in a longer run today (Monday).  Looking at the weather last night I was concerned that we would be rained out.  We also had a long day yesterday and agreed that we would allow ourselves to sleep in – What – sleep in – what is that?  So when I woke up this morning a little after 8 (I can’t remember the last time I slept in that late!) my first thought was that we missed our running window as the rain was coming in.  After taking a quick look at the radar we decided that we would may get some rain but nothing we couldn’t handle so lets go!  We headed out from Tamara’s sisters house in Corinth.  Boy, they have some hills in Maine!  The weather was really comfortable but the terrain was challenging.  Tamara mapped out the course before we left and we figured we would get in about 12 miles.  We were running up some serious hills at around mile 6.  I felt really strong but realized that Tamara was struggling a bit.  I can tell instantly that Tamara isn’t feeling well when we run together because she normally pushes our pace and today that wasn’t happening.  I asked her a few times if she was ok and she kept saying yes (she tends to not tell me what is wrong).  I find out after our run that her legs were feeling really heavy.  I get this on occasion and it is just the worst feeling but she is a trooper and pushed through to 12.5 miles.  I kept going a little further to get 13.1 – I just like that number!  Proud of Tamara today for pushing through a very very difficult run!  I’m not sure my running schedule the rest of the week – I definitely have more planned and would like to get in a few more 13 milers – time will tell.
