Yeah!!! I Won!!!
My 1st Overall Win!! – Funny, I was wavering on whether or not to run the 2nd Annual Women in Defense Run. I had pre-registered and was more than happy to support this cause but I’m not really a fan of the 5k Race. I’m just so competitive that the whole race ends up being uncomfortable for me, feel like I’m always pushing hard and now that I’m running longer distances the 5k just doesn’t seem like as much of a workout. I also did about everything you aren’t supposed to do before a race yesterday. I didn’t rest (ran 3 miles in the morning and 6 in the afternoon), I ate way too much (4 pieces of cake – and a huge birthday dinner for dad), drank 12 beers (kidding didn’t really drink any beers!), also didn’t get as much sleep as I should have 🙂 – but I wake up this morning feeling pretty good and decide to go. Upon arriving I instantly see this group of runners that I have seen at a few races, they are all in great shape and fast. I text Tamara and tell her that I already see a couple of speedsters, she tells me to relax and assures me that I still have my age group and then tells me to run fast (funny how that adds a little pressure!). So we start – I lead from the beginning – about a mile in I get passed (later find out this is a Marine named Jason – super nice guy) and proceed to keep pace with him for the next 1/2 mile or so. I pass Jason just before the turnaround and keep the lead from there. The last 1/2 mile or so was tough for me, I have never lead a race and I must admit I turned my head a few times to see how close Jason was but I was able to maintain my lead and win. No waiting for the results this time I knew I came in 1st! Really a great feeling, heard Tamara’s voice in my head a few times (run fast!) – wish she was there because she would have won the 1st overall woman. Admittedly, this was a small race and many of the local fast runners weren’t there but I will take it my best time ever 20:07 and first place! Click here for more race pictures.
